SF recommendations to miajesbar

Just recommended (as usual):

  • Hyperion Cantos / Endymion / The Rise of Endymion by Dan Simmons

  • The Saga of Pliocene Exile and the Galactic Milieu Trilogy by Julian May

  • The Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley (NB: I've only just started myself)

  • The First and Second Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny

Edit, 03:30 CDT Sat 17 Apr 2004: Dominic Gelinas recommended Dawn and Xenogenesis by Octavia Butler to me, after I saw him with a copy of Shadow of the Hegemon and we started discussing everything from Rice's Vampire Chronicles to Kurtz's Deryni series.

Doesn't anyone read Aldiss's Helliconia trilogy anymore?

Re: Hadn't heard of it
It's an old trilogy by Aldiss - you know Brian W. Aldiss, of 'Non-Stop' and 'Hothouse', don't you? - that's on a fantasy-like planet with very long (civilization-size timeline) seasons of the 'year'. Basic premise is similar to Asimov's 'Nightfall' and alike stories with major, cyclic astronomical change coming on, but the span of the story is very epic (the back-cover quotes usually compare sf books like that to 'Dune', but this time it's a fair comparison). And it has some very interesting plot-twists developing over the trilogy.
It's an old book and a bit hard to get (Out of Stock at Amazon, sadly), but if you do get one, read it, it's a must.

Aldiss
I know Brian Aldiss by name, but I must admit I've never read a novel by him. I'm sure I've come across a short story of his before, but I can't recall any titles off the top of my head.

My might be a bit fried - exhausted and frustrated by yet another of my notebook computer drives going bad.

Thanks for the rec.
