I will miss our... conversations

Just finished The Last Samurai. A pointed and poignant film, that.

As is usual with period dramas that are only loosely based on real historical events, it had me scrambling for the references, but I think the film as a whole was superb. Well acted, excellent art direction, supreme cinematography... ah, but then, it went up against the momentum of The Return of the King in the 2004 awards, didn't it? And so we see the importance of momentum. Ah, well.

That was a beautiful film. And Ken Watanabe totally should have won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar (although I have to admit, Tim Robbins did do a good job in his film).

Cinematography and art direction: TLS and House of Flying Daggers
Kindasorta: The blood was the one thing I quite expected.

I wondered at the cinematographic similarities between The Last Samurai and House of Flying Daggers... AFAIK, there aren't any common directors, artists, or crew. Anybody know?
