... and already the term Pope Palpatine has been coined (by tlatoani, among others).

"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition," many note. The new Pope Benedict 16th, formerly Cardinal Ratzenbergerer as figgylicious calls him, was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which, during and after the centuries of the Renaissance, was called the Office of the Holy Inquisition.

Folks who are quite sure that era is bygone need to read a book by Dan Simmons... hyperion_cantos, folks; like Julian May's Galactic Milieu trilogy, that other apologia for the Jesuit futurist Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, it isn't just for SF fans. Personally, I would be glad to see someone like Paul Dure in the miter, and imagine that Catholic folks might too, if they'd heard of him.

Anyhow... prayers indeed.

Now, witness the power of this fully operational Vatican
A-hahahahaaa. They're quick, they are.

They must have already, yes?

Interesting reading. I knew very little about Cardinal Ratzinger (I still do, but now I know more about him than I knew about the late Pope John Paul II before his death).

Note that http://www.ratzingerfanclub.com/ CRASHED! I'm still crying with laughter. I guess that's what comes with being elected Pope in the internet era.
I wouldn't be surprised if http://www.vatican.va itself crashed - it must be getting in excess of the 400 hits per second that NASA's Mars Pathfinder site got during the 1997 landing, or the 450 per second that Starwars.com got the day the title of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was announced.

Or maybe not; perhaps folks are all hitting CNN.

People are fast! I saw the announcement 3 hours ago and now I see icons and banners and spoof pictures everywhere; there are probably animations and videos, too, many that were even made since the announcement.

Did you have your icon before?

Interesting. For a moment I thought the logo on the bottom was for the WWF.

Re: Rudy Ratzinger: member of the band :wumpscut:
Yeah, it's really only marginally amusing, because that band, for the most part, sings a whole lot of crap. It's more amusing to see Rudy Ratzinger as a WWF wrestler. :D

Spam! Spam! Spam!
No argument here, though the "miter" looks more like a Viking helm than a real bishop's headdress.

Give this a read when you can, and let me know what you think...

It's unfortunate that the documents from which they claim those prophecies are taken aren't linked on the page anywhere...

Not in my book...
I knew next to squat until two hours ago, myself.
'tis rather important thought, IMO, to know as much as reasonably possible about a person who has nominal direct influence and religious authority over a billion and a half people, and more important, ecclesiastical governance of the church that so many world leaders belong to.

OTOH, I couldn't tell you who any of the Orthodox patriarchs, Jewish rabbinical leaders, or chief imams of Islam are. The Dalai Lama... the Archbishop of Canterbury... that's about it.
