So... is anyone planning to get a Permanent Account during Tuesday's 24-hour sale?
Is anyone thinking about it?
... tempting, innit?

In other news: I've edited last Saturday's post to include my biweekly scream for computer help. ;-)

Oh, I'm thinking very seriously about it. Just to lose the trouble of having to renew is worth at least a quarter of the $150 price tag.

Carousel is a lie! There IS NO RENEWAL!
<CHANTING>Renew! Renew! Renew!</CHANTING>

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I forget everything (that I'm supposed to), though.
Er - supposed to remember.
See what I mean?

What? Huh?

I'm using the very old-fashioned means of a post-it note on my monitor to help me remember tomorrow!

Ill-regulated memories
Yes, exactly:
"I have the most ill-regulated memory. It does those things which it ought not to do and leaves undone the things it ought to have done. But it has not yet gone on strike altogether."

Of course, you should get one, as much as you do and post on this site. (^_^)

I'm considering it, but as I don't really have an extra $150 lying around anywhere.... And if I did, the hospital and doctors and x-ray technicians and MRI technicians and occupational therapists and physical therapists and other assorted medical personnel, oh my, would want it! (>_<)

Always, but she hasn't yet discovered the joys of money... (and things are looking up in the slipped disk department - when I get back from my long weekend away, I'm going to try taking her off the painkillers).

No, the usefulnesses I'm thinking of are more in the moving-house-fund direction.

When cats discover money... well, think about it.
Root of all evil, embodiment of all evil.
End of loonyverse ensues post-haste.
I hate when that happens.

I am. Now I just have to hope that the next big thing in internet communication won't blow LJ out of the water for at least 6 years so that it pays off.

It very well may, but...
... supplanting is as supplanting does! In a way, LiveJournal supplanted personal and custom blogs, but people still have those. And you could say that wikis have supplanted content management systems (Yahoo! Groups) and mailing lists (Majordomo)... wait, that's a bad analogy, because Wikis and LJ work at cross purposes there.

Well, let me raise an alternative conjecture: Internet communication doesn't advance purely through one technology supplanting another, but by subsumption. Take RSS. It's augmented subscription-based services rather than supplanted them. Even "push" services such as PointCast/EntryPoint/InfoGate lasted three incarnations before portals and RSS completely killed them, and even now, RIM Blackberry systems are subsuming some of the functionality of AvantGo and other PocketPC point-to-point (802.11b WiFi) newsfeeds.1 So, I fully expect the next generation of Wikis to offer "now with LJ/GJ embedding support" rather than just seize market share from LJ.

1 As Scott Adams wrote in a Dilbert strip in the calendar for last month: if you or anyone you love understood that, my sincere sympathy!

Re: It very well may, but...
I was thinking more along the lines of popularity rather than science or availability - for instance, yahoogroups still exists, but everyone I talked to regularly is over here on LJ now and the lists have no traffic.

Doubtless LJ will also have its day - but as long as the sun takes 6+ years to set, I won't cheat myself with a lifetime membership.

I really should learn how to use that text messaging service.
Yet another time sink, wae!

That "Permanent Account, previously an Early Adopter" is quite a badge of prestige! I was going to try for "Permanent Account, previously an Free Account", but some kind anonymous soul beat me to paying for my first two months of paid service this January and February.

Expected value (risk) == probability * utility/cost
Not tempted in the slightest. I have three years' worth paid by great people and that's quite enough for now. What if one pays the 150 dollars and livejournal.com goes to nonexistence in a year or two? It's too much of a risk of a waste of money to be considered seriously, if you ask me.
Assuming you and I view $150 roughly the same way, the risk depends on how likely you think LJ is to decline or become significantly less useful within the next (150 / 35) years.

I think the chance that it will increase in usefulness is actually higher. I'm rather counting on inheriting some of the upgrade features (as has always been the case with permanent accounts), though. For example, in 5 years I fully expect the icon limit to be higher than 100 (perhaps 1000 like GJ, perhaps gone), the servers to be faster, and many more nifty syndication, embedding, audio, and IM/SMS features to have been added.

Chacun a son gout, though! And you deserve every bit of paid account time you get!

Cheers,
Banazir

So... is anyone planning to get a Permanent Account during Tuesday's 24-hour sale?

Thats this week? I saw that message last tuesday and thought it was then. Really need to get my eyes tested again, the glasses I have are absolutely useless (then again two different opticians gave me too totally different readings so ...)

I might do. I was trying to weigh up the pro's and con's of it, but hey you are the mathematician and I knew you'd have it all worked out...
I *think* I can afford to do it this week althoough the money could be better spent ... hmm, decisions decisions.

When EXACTLY does the sale start?
I thought that, as it is now 23:10 CST Mon 06 Jun 2005, that it is past "midnight EST on June 7th". Do they mean now through 24 hours from now, or 24 hours through 48 hours from now?
