Edit, 22:15 CST Wed 29 Jun 2005 - Apropos of money-making, may it be added that Jim Cramer of CNBC's Mad Money is fantastically hyper-tronkie? Total teunce! Yesterday he did a whole segment addressing the question: "How is a tech rally sustainable given slowing capital spending?" Let me tell you, financial investment shows are a lot more fun when the host has a degree from Harvard and a MOO button! Move over, Suze Orman!

Dell's are historically exceedingly reliable. When I was working for Tivoli Systems before they were fully IBMized, I went to a class and sat beside a guy who had a really old Dell laptop. It was a brick. But he attested to its reliability by telling me a story about how he accidentally dropped it on the ground and it still worked. I'm not sure I'd try that with the newer, more sleek models, but I know the reliability hasn't changed.

If I ever bought a laptop, I'd want it to have a graphics card that would work with today's quality of games. That makes going to LAN parties so much easier. Dell was the only company I knew that provided laptops with fairly recent graphics cards. I think Alienware will make them, too, but they're hella expensive. I've always been a bit partial to the Vaio because of its style.

Sounds good!
I've always thought that IBMs are best for service and quality, Dells are best for price, durability, and battery life (and nearly the equal of ThinkPads for reliability), and Vaios are the most beautiful.

LOL! Yes.
There's a 128Mb graphics card, but I decided not to spring for it, or the 9-cell battery.

Ooh, very nice. How much RAM? Just the default 256Mb? Any warranty beyond the 90 days?

Re: Dell Inspiron 700m
i upgraded the ram to 512, harddrive to 60gig, DVD-CDRW to DVD-RW, warranty was 1 year, upgraded to 3 :]

they sent me a great coupon after my 700m was shipped that allowed me to upgrade my warranty to 3 years for 100 bucks.

i had a disgustingly good coupon and basically got $750 bucks off the machine. it's a $1700+ machine for $1000(!)

i really love how compact and powerful this thing is.. and i code on it all the time too. it's light, looks great. (yes, i like cute things haha even laptops) the display is great. i had originally wanted a vaio and was shopping around for a used vaio at $1000 or so that is small and light but not too much luck.. and found this deal on http://www.gotapex.com and it was just too good to pass up.

I've been watching all the Firefly I can, lately. One of the guys in my roleplaying group lend me the DVDs, and I'm devouring them. What an awesome show.

Just an aside.

Dell...no...make the..noooooo...
Dell...why oh why didn't I take the IBM pill? Nahh...not still bitter about them wanting $1000 dollars to fix a $30 part because they soldered it in needlessly (Happened 1 day after the warranty stopped). Or about the motherboard melting because the fans quit working after a few months. Also, not P.O.ed at the HD corrupting a year's worth of my school projects (They were backups, so no fire-bombs yet). Nope, the last straws were that Dell Poster-boy, their commercials advertising "Talk-to-the-machine-who-sounds-like-a-human" tech-support as a revolutionary idea, and their lack of discounts to the corporate and/or government employee. Will the emotional scars ever heal?

Don't worry, banazir, I promise to build you a good one when I get back ;).
