Can't post to campus, so I'll post here

Our university computer network lost off-campus access has been down for 60-90 minutes now and the Info Tech Help Desk acknowledges the problem, but has no identified cause nor an ETA for a solution; I don't think they get enough irate users when this sort of thing happens, so there's a bit of lack of accountability.

Edit, 10:30 CST - As scottharmon notes, and as you can see from the return of the mood theme icons, network access just came back!

One-Word Meme:
Describe me in one word - just one. Comment to me, then post this entry to your Live Journal and see how many strange things people think about you.

Snurched from the LiveJournal of deire.

Edit, 10:25 CST - I just passed the 10,000 word mark in Nanowrimo at 04:00. Here is an excerpt from the first chapter of Book 2, my Nano 2005 entry (it's in the bottom 6 comments). I told masteralida I'd write the encounter from the bear POV, and I did! Feedback and critiques are welcome, as always.

If the IT dept is setup like most irate users only serve to antagonize helpdesk staff not actually get things resolved any faster on the backend. A huge surge of calls can occasionally get someone annoyed enough to pick up a phone and yell at someone to get things done faster, but it would need to be a huge surge and it would have to be tech fixable instead of sysadmin fixable. In my experiences if it's only fixable by a sysadmin no amount of yelling on the front end will get him to move faster and the sysadmin is either on top of his stuff and still cares enough to try to resolve it asap or he's jaded and won't be moved faster by a level 1 responder. Techs can be pushed and prodded by an adept helpdesk agent into re-prioritization.

Again this depends heavily on the way things are setup at your Uni, but the above represents my experiences from working at a college IT helpdesk.

True, but here's the thing
As I was telling cavlec in IM, the sysadmins in the department have actually started telling faculty and students to directly e-mail the department head, asking for intervention of the fiscal variety.

"They're desperate," she remarked.

And how. But it might work, and it's worth a try, insofar as it gives feedback for prioritization, and a specific, concrete need to go to alumni donors with, since the campus central administration doesn't help with building-specific aspects of infrastructure. (In this case, it's a campus-wide problem, so they'd better help!)

Re: True, but here's the thing
Ouch. Looks like you have some of the good kind of sysadmins, but it also looks like the Univ. has them over the provebial barrel. Having the supported base directly appeal to the administration is a dire sign when fiscal matters are at hand. Good luck to your IT dept hopefully this tactic will result in some needed funds. And a more immediate good luck to resolving the campus wide issue, those suck.
