Edit, 11:55 CST Tue 06 Dec 2005 - Wow, I completely forgot this last weekend.

Thanks to all who have helped with previous ones, which I posted on:

Thanks to twinofhugin, tvn, and m45, who replied last time.

Here's my fortnightly update:

Now for the new questions:

Memory, it's so easy to leave me

What kind of memory is the best to give as a Christmas present: Secure Digital (SD) memory, CompactFlash, USB JumpDrive/Cruzer/data keys, Sony Memory Sticks, or something else?

Cleaning up commercial annoyware

The sheer amount of factory-installed annoyware on Hirilonde, my Dell Inspiron 6000, is - well, annoying. These 60-day trial things drive me nuts, because I actually have better software of the antivirus and web graphics variety than comes with the computer. Now I've filled up my measly 40Gb and the stupid thing keeps alert-boxing my procrastinating butt to do something. I conjure it's time to just end WinXP Home and start afresh with WinXP Pro SP2, but mayhap there's some way I can make a clean sweep? (There used to be a product called CleanSweep, IIRC.)

Also, why do I keep lapsing into Firefly-speak?

OpenOffice as an MS Office replacement: anything else?

I thought our department's MSDN covers Office 2003, but apparently not. Suppose I lay down OpenOffice and Mozilla Thunderbird. What else will I need to be compatible with Evil?

Thanks very much in advance!

Wow, I didn't know there was a TV series based on The Day of the Triffids!

AH! you don't watch 'Arrested Development'?? It's the funniest show on TV for crying out loud! Of course, now Fox has cancelled it so you've only got 5 more new episodes to watch starting next week I think...but still, its' good.

*pats on the back* I know, I know...we watched 'Top Banana' with some friends yesterday, probably one of my favorite episodes (gotta love GOB's act of defiance) and the whole time we're like "how can people not find this funny?"

*crosses fingers that miracle occurs to keep it going a bit longer*

omg that's totally one of my all time favorite episodes. I just finished sending out my letters to NBC and Showtime to beg to pick up the show!

I really need to write some letters, I've been monitering the whole campaign to save the show but I haven't actually done anything yet.

Did you see that the writers are already putting together an episode that pokes fun at FOX for cancelling the show?

*sigh* At least I have my dvds to watch over and over and over...especially monday nights when prison break is on cuz I feel as though AD got the shaft because of that show...grrrrrr

It really angers me to see such crap programming continue while AD struggles.

Would you mind if I friended you?

I don't mind at all,(though I do tend to babble in my lj so be prepared!) I'm sure banazir would prefer that to us hijacking his threads anytime the mention of AD comes up ;)

the set intersection of your 'bold' list and my 'bold' list is SG-1 :P

Not even the new Battlestar Galactica?
IMO that's a good show. And Stargate: Atlantis suits my taste better than SG-1.

Re: Not even the new Battlestar Galactica?
I don't remember much about Battlestar Galactica, ... have to check it out again. I tend to attract to a show because of the actors/actresses in there. I like Amanda Tapping (Samatha Carter) so I like SG1.

You never watched Kung Fu, with its fakey-fakey not-Chinese guy? Interestingly enough, my mom watches all these old shows with white people pretending to be Asian. I don't know how she stands it. In one movie they had tape on their eyelids. Tape!

BTW, you didn't alphabetize your additions. :P

nude questions...
Memory...
I suppose it depends what the person has who's receiving the gift, USB will normally cover most, people although I also use a fair amount of SD memory sticks. Perhaps a gentle probe would reveal what they'd be happiest receiving?

Commercial annoyware...
I also use a Inspiron 6000, although it has a 60gb HD and is yet to fill up as I've hardly used any 60-day trials yet, my other lappy only has a 10gb drive and I just do a manual clean of it from time to time - I just rip everything out that I've either not used for ages or is a waste of time to try and use. For me the software cleaners never work as well as I like them to. I do find useful one thing on XP (shocking but true) is the add/remove programmes box as it does tell say how often you use an application. If you do rip things out manually its often easier to do it by booting from a different drive so that XP does not constantly complain about permissions/rights/etc.

OpenOffice...
I'd think OpenOffice and Thunderbird are a fair replacement, I've used OpenOffice a fair bit and StarOffice from Sun.com which you do pay for I think though I had a free student license one for a while which was easier than MSOff to use and quicker.
