Congratulations, Waleed!

Props to Waleed Al-Jandal, one of the grad students in my group, the Lab for Knowledge Discovery in Databases. He's a second-year Ph.D. student and just passed all of his preliminary exams. Like Jason Li, he's now technically "ABD" (all but dissertation). It will be a year or two yet, but good job, Waleed!

I don't know him, but big congrats! That takes such determination. Way to go!

Indeed, thanks!
Even when it isn't one of my students - or indeed a student in our department - it's a big deal.

Seeing one of my own flock actually make the hurdle gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling, though.

ABC, Bill. (gawd, tech writers are sooooooooooo undervalued!)
*ducks and runs*

E.Ma.Ho! Another one fledges! Fine stuff ... I'm sure he has benefitted from your tutelage; it must make you proud.

And such a salient focus! I picked up a text on graphical representation of problems. This, of course, only proceeds on "What the heck happens when we represent knowledge as an image" ... it's all about knowledge discover, ain't it.

A bit of yokel wisdom I got my one of my Xs, a Maine girl: an old man sez, "Problem isn't what you don't know, problem is what you think you know that ain't so." heh ... foundational to my ParDelib. *drags fingernail across desktop checking for minute cracks.*

This by way of pretext; I wanted to tack this onto the reply where you gave me Fu but could not locate it, so here: does "QiMen DunJia" or "Qi Men Dun Jia" rings bells? I was at one time very familiar with Tarot; at another time I was situated so as to devote myself to the study of I Ching; in a monastic situation I practiced the Tibetan method of "Mo" (which is actually a Manjusri practice). But this ... the Feng Shui of events ... yaa yaa yaaaa!

cheers
