China, Day 11: A Morning on the Square

Lee Family Reunion 2006: China
A Tronkie Travellogue
Day 11: Tian An Men Square and Da Zhai Men Dinner Theatre

A face dancer at Dazhaimen, an immersive dinner theatre in Beijing.

In the morning, we visit the Gate of Heavenly Peace (tian1 an1 men2) and the famous square.

Bian4lian3 (face-changing) is the ancient and world-renowned Sichuanese art of mask opera. A face dancer can change his or her masks half a dozen times or more in a performance, faster than the viewer's eye can follow.

I wonder aloud to my cousins whether Frank Herbert got the term "face dancer" from bianlian. I doubt it, but it's a colorful term, nevertheless.
