Good company

Boy, let me tell you: nothing prepares you for an annual or semiannual house-cleaning like an imminent dinner party! I always think of it as an archaeological treat, though, because I end up finding things that have been missing for months: back issues of magazines, books, papers, textbook lists and "new books in print", reply cards for subscriptions to trade magazines, etc.

Reading (almost) everything, throwing away (almost) nothing
Exactly! That's what makes cleaning my bane. I can never clear a bag of old papers in less than an hour, and if I had a half day, I'd probably spend that long.

Rereading is the way of the fishie!
Which is to say that when your short-term memory starts to go a little wonky from a too-busy schedule, every old discovery is a new adventure. Or something like that.

I understand. This is the start of family holiday/birthday season for me. I usually end up doing a Fall cleaning rather than a Spring cleaning because I'm hosting probably 5 events between now and New Years.

Have a good fall entertaining season!
It's definitely seasonal for me, too - the autumn (September through December) is especially busy. Every few years, I might have a pre-Christmas dinner party or one right after New Year's, too.

I've been known to throw parties because the house needed a good cleaning and that's the only impetus to make me really scrub. :D

Paper waste
For the most part, it's all about papers for me - papers, journals, magazines, booklets, fliers, reply cards, etc.

Found research is fun research
Exactly. I've been working to break out of my habit of procrastinating on certain research and teaching tasks lately, so it really is energizing to find something a couple of years old that is still timely (perhaps more so now than then).

Paper is my downfall when it comes to cleaning. I'm so easily distracted by an interesting article!
