Confusion is a two-way street

Apropos of my discussions on attendance: it is important to speak up when one is confused, or needs help. Students aren't mind readers and, more to the point, neither are instructors.

Which is precisely the reason I tell my students: if you aren't sure about the requirements of an assignment, ask your professor. "I won't know anymore than you know about your assignment when you come to me for help."

I encourage students to not be afraid to ask the professors questions about whether or not a source is acceptable or not. What I would deem acceptable for certain assignments might not be acceptable to their professor. And while I know what some professors would want in certain assignments - because they've given me a heads-up, or a copy of the assignment, or just because I know them personally - I can't say that for all professors.
