Post-Nano Computing

ETA, 05 Nov 2008: 59 weeks since my last post, about 100 since I've been filling this journal regularly. This has to be my personal record for "BRB". Hey, it's a new America, what better day for me to come back? ;-)

Day by day we pray and pray: computer problems, go away!

Can anyone recommend:

  • a way to find where in GMail the unread messages are? (i.e., sort by read status)

  • software for maintaining /etc/passwd and home directories automatically, so that if a UID changes, things don't automatically go out of kilter?

  • a nightly incremental backup system, preferably free software? (Windows, Linux, or both, please)

Danke schoen,
Banazir

How about RIBS? Though since it's not really my field and I don't know what you're really looking for, so... sorry if this is absolutely opposite of what you want :D

Thanks, though! It's good to be writing again. The last time I had any time to write (Sep - Dec 2007), othertrask and Nanowrimo 2007 ate my fall semester.

Re: Thanks and good luck!
hehe, not post-prelim, pre-prelim.

hopefully I'll be ABD on Nov 21.

As for how much longer, in your absense I got a NSF, and my project totally rocks, so I'm thinking 3-4 years, actually. I'll still be on the average side for my dept, but c'est la vie.
