Can anyone help me put a stop to the following Windows problems:

  • extra instance of WinZip or PowerArchiver in system tray

  • the "inactive icons" dialog that Windows pops up every now and again

  • "User Account Control" warnings in Vista?

Help, help, I'm being suppressed!

Thanks,
Banazir

inactive icons - right click on task bar -> properties -> uncheck "Hide Inactive Icons"

or, if you are talking about the warning regarding unused icons on desktop -

right click on desktop -> properties -> desktop tab -> customize desktop -> uncheck "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days"

Found that while trying to help my roommate get Fallout 3 working on his (Vista) computer.

are your inactive icons lobbed by watery bints? that might be the problem.

User Account Control warnings are actually useful.

I have a slight problem with a suspicious "Internet Explorer ActiveX Control Installer" on the Vista bandwidth box, that:
  • Norton AV doesn't see a problem with
  • Launches only when YIM is open
RumorNet unreliably suggests this may be a Yahoo! Toolbar installer, which begs the question of why YIM has forgotten my preference for not installing a toolbar on a browser that I use only for Windows Update and reality-checking web interfaces.

With User Account Control, this doesn't even run.
