You're It: The LiveJournal Tag System

How do you use the LJ tag system? I've been just tagging willy-nilly and adding as many keywords as I think I will need to search on later.

ETA, 09:45 CST Wed 19 Nov 2008 - You can see where this has led. I'm now at 1258 tags, 58 over a post hoc limit of 1200 imposed by the powers that be. A bit arbitary, if you ask me!

Lemme at it! Lemme at it!
You've got anigifs, animated gif, and animated gifs.

Now, with Library of Congress Subject Headings, the singular and plural forms are distinct headings. "Symphony" talks about the type of music. It's music theory, really. "Symphonies" would be about specific examples of symphonies - possibly a review of all the symphonies that the Boston Pops have played.

If you wanted to keep that distinction, 'animated gif' would be used to discuss animated gifs in general: what their technical limitations are, how to create them, whether they are tools Morgoth or not. 'animated gifs' would be for posts that discuss specific animated gifs.

At any rate, the three tags I mentioned (anigifs, animated gif, and animated gifs) could be merged into two tags or even one tag, with minimal loss of accessibility.

Likewise computer problem/computer problems, and ai/artificial intelligence, and livejournal/lj and d&d/dungeons and dragons.

Funny/humor might be mergeable, but that would need to be reviewed manually. I suspect lyrics/song lyrics can be merged, too.

Heh - library/libraries should also be reviewed for mergeability. And correct library sciecne to library science while you're at it, please? It's not so much a problem now, but if you add another library science post, you may tag it with the correct spelling, and that will create a second tag for that topic. Oddly, your 'ksu needs a library science department' is not tagged as library science. (Or library sciecne.) Instead, it has the library tag and the science tag.

extreme simplification
like extreme makeover -- lettuce at your journal, bana! you won't be able to recognise your own word!

put enough effort into this, and you could end up with just one tag -- stuff. or, if you need to be more specific, "stuff", for normal stuff, "struff", for rilly good stuff, and "stuffit". of curse, this would end up with all three tags imploding, and your journal wood beecomb clean clean clean.

Re: Lemme at it! Lemme at it!
Oh, found http://banazir.livejournal.com/tag/ - which lets me see the tags in a font size I can actually read.

Let's see...

I may have missed a few. But these are the ones that jumped out at me when I reviewed your tag list in the mindset of authority control.

And if everything I mentioned is mergeable... that's 59 tags freed up. Which brings you in under the limit.

Initially, I tried to keep it simple, but that quest made it more difficult to retrace my steps. I've since added more tags, but I still aim to keep the tags manageable. Most of my life could probably be divided into fifty tags!

I've been tagging things with dull boring tags for quite a while now, and always try to use a tag when I post something, but recently I decided to spice things up and use mainly song lyrics for my tags as they are more multipurpose and interesting. For instance i now use 'an alternative to feeling like yourself' from the Barenaked Ladies song 'Alcohol' for alcohol related things and for when I'm not feeling like myself.
