The Longest Survey

I must warn you, this 372-question Survey of Trask took me 3.5 hours, though my friends finished it in an hour or so.

[ .F A M I L Y. ] - 19:46

[ .028. ] mother's name: Carol (Wade-Giles: Lee Kai-Rue, Pinyin: Li Kailu)
[ .029. ] father's name: Charles (Wade-Giles: Hsu Kuei-Yen, Pinyin: Xu Guiyan)

[ .036. ] worst relative: Hm... hard to say. Most relatives are very good people, almost all have redeeming qualities - e.g., second son of second aunt was the academic black sheep but has since gotten his act together. I'll say Cynthia Lee is the worst because she is a little devil by all accounts.
[ .037. ] best relative: So many to choose from! Grandmother from #035 is the most forgiving; aunt Camille from #033 is the most open-minded (and one of the most generous and kindhearted people I know), uncle Kai-Fu from #034 is the highest achiever and best mentor by far.
[ .038. ] do you get along with your parent(s): Usually, yes.
[ .039. ] does anyone in your family understand you?: My parents understand me a little. Aunt Camille (whom they call my "birth mother" in jest) probably understands me a little better.

[ .S C H O O L. ] - 19:55

[ .043. ] are you still in school: No
[ .044. ] did you drop out: No
[ .045. ] current gpa, or last gpa you got: 4.0 (whole 5 years at Illinois, not a big deal in grad school)
[ .046. ] favorite grade: A
[ .047. ] least favorite grade: B (no, that's not grade inflation; I just test well - 'B' is the lowest grade I've ever gotten outside of a pass-fail course)
[ .048. ] favorite teacher: So many! UIUC, Urbana, IL: Dr. Sylvian Ray (advisor), Dr. David Goldberg (committee member), Dr. Lenny Pitt (lecturer); JHU, Baltimore, MD: Dr. Amy Zwarico (advisor), Dr. Simon Kasif (instructor, CS), Dr. Ed Scheinerman/Dr. Roger Horn (instructors, math), Dr. Mark Orletsky (supervisor - let us get away with serious stuff as lab proctors); Severn: Elizabeth Francis MacCallum (best overall instructor), Charlotte Berry/Doug Sassi (art), Paula McFarland (languages), Joel Madden (general mentor), Mr. Kirby (encouraging my overall madcap streak); Severna Park Middle, Severna Park, MD: Mr. Lilly and Ms. Odin (art - never, ever let me be lazy or irresponsible), Mr. Jones (best... lecturer... evah); Scott Lake Elementary, Lakeland, FL: the speech teacher (will remember her name soon), Mrs. Holland (Alpha); Plant City Elementary, Plant City, FL: nobody; Hillsboro Elementary, Hillsboro, NJ: Mrs. Leidl (math and science) and Ms. Kouba (social studies and English), the GT teacher (auugh!); Temple Christian School, Lakeland, FL: Mrs. Gowan (4th grade), Rev. Herman (my friend David's dad); Arlington Baptist School: Mrs. Dalton (kindergarten); Catholic pre-school: can't remember
[ .049. ] least favorite teacher: A few... The Tyrant and Tyrant Jr. at Illinois; the Sysadmin at Hopkins; the Bitter Woman at Severna Park Middle; the Pedant at Scott Lake Elementary; the Angry Snack Tosser at Temple Christian.
[ .050. ] favorite subject: Computer Science (CS), especially Information Theory and Applied Probability, in grad school; Discrete Math as an undergrad; English and History (European and Asian) in HS; English and Music (Concert Choir) in middle school; Algebra in elementary school, Art in kindergarten. What are you all looking at?! :-P
[ .051. ] least favorite subject: umm... technical writing.
[ .052. ] do/did you buy lunch or bring it: Oh, God, nooooo... brought it through 4th grade, bought it in 5th-8th, then went back to being a dork for two years. :-P
[ .053. ] play any sports on the school's team: You really have the embarrassing questions, don't you? Fine! I was the girls' lacrosse scorekeeper because I didn't make the junior varsity tennis team. Happy now?! (Yeah, the Math Team didn't count as a sport and I wasn't in the Chess Club anyway. :-P)
[ .054. ] do/did you do any extracurricular activities: Grad school: helped out minimally with conference outings and such; pretty inactive in the grad student organization. Undergrad: I was a 1991 initiate of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society (Maryland Alpha chapter). High school: Computer Club, Math Team, typical tronkie stuff. Middle school: Role-Playing Club (if you are thinking about beating me up, I have grown up and have a looooot of RP friends >:-))
[ .055. ] are/were you popular: Hrm, good question. I am told I was one of the popular "cool nerds" in HS but it didn't feel that way. I was a bit of a class clown, too, I suppose, but I resist labels.
[ .056. ] favorite dance: Only ever attended one (7th grade); crashed and burned trying to work up the nerve to approach my crush. Oh, wow, this survey is bringing out all of my traumas! It's sooooo much fun! Whee!
[ .057. ] favorite memory: Too many to list. See stories about Mr. Sassi, grade skipping, etc. The day I got a 5 on the Calc AB Advanced Placement exam (1988) was pretty happy, as was the day I got into Hopkins. High school graduation (03 June 1989) was very cool: I got a special award for being the youngest student ever to graduate from Severn.
[ .058. ] least favorite dance: See #56 above and please stop reminding me! :-P
[ .059. ] least favorite memory: Coming home from high school graduation on 03 June 1989 to learn of the Tian An Men Square masssacre (it was 04 June 1989 in China). I will never forget that as long as I live.
[ .060. ] most humiliating moment: See #56 above - I told you to stop reminding me!! OK, there were a couple of others, not quite as bad: racist bullying in 7th grade; a lipstick signature in my 8th-grade yearbook (I was mean to the girl and made her white it out; if you are reading this, A., sorry!); realizing that I had insulted a girl who was expecting to be invited to the HS prom because I was too busy agonizing over another young lady (if you are reading this, other A., sorry!); being sucker-punched in 10th grade (come to think of it, that wasn't so bad!). Oh, and the Apple ][ BLOAD incident. Don't go there.

That was horrible!

[ .F A V O R I T E S. ] - 20:34

[ .061. ] Number: 216 (cube of the first perfect number, part of my handle as a teenaged BBS hacker/phreaker)
[ .062. ] clothing brand: Don't really have one - wear a lot of Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, a few others (Uomo, Profilo)
[ .063. ] shoe brands: I hate buying shoes. I change pairs every 2 years, tops. Rockport and Reebok are the brands I've owned for the last... let's see... 11 years. About 4 pairs at Illinois and 3 here. That's more than I've wanted or needed.
[ .064. ] saying: Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. -Isaac Asimov
[ .065. ] tv show: Right now I'm fond of Angel, Smallville, Clone Wars, and Star Trek: Enterprise. I've also watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Star Trek: Voyager (about half of the episodes), Friends (1st-3rd seasons), The X-Files (1st-5th seasons), and Star Trek: The Next Generation (all but a few episodes) with some enthusiasm. I would say my favorite show so far has to be TNG.

[ .067. ] vegetable: Hmm... jade cress (qing1 gang1 cai4)
[ .068. ] fruit: Fresh Florida oranges

[ .070. ] magazine: Right now, a toss-up between MacWorld and Maximum PC
[ .071. ] actor: Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Harrison Ford, Kenneth Branagh, Patrick Stewart. Denzel Washington, Nicholas Cage, Sean Astin, and Kevin Bacon are also very good. I'd say Pacino if I had to choose.
[ .072. ] actress: Meg Ryan, Sigourney Weaver, Debra Winger, Halle Berry, Ming-Na Wen. Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Moira Kelly are also fantastic. Ryan, if I had to pick one.
[ .073. ] movie director: Akira Kurosawa, though I have only seen one of his films all the way through (The Seven Samurai). Aside from him, it's a 3-way tie among Ang Lee, John Woo, and Peter Jackson. James Cameron, not so much. Go ahead and string me up, borgseawolf. :-)
[ .074. ] gum: Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice - I also like Big Red (cinnamon, mm) and Zebra Stripe (but its flavor is too quickly exhausted)
[ .075. ] scent: Various "sea scent" aromatherapies. There are a few liquid soaps that make me nostalgic for New Jersey; let me take a whiff and I can tell you.
[ .076. ] candy bar: Baby Ruth. 100 Grand and Bit O'Honey are also nice.
[ .077. ] ice cream flavor: Rum Raisin or Thin Mint. Butter pecan and Black Cherry are nice, as are most coffee-flavored ice creams.

[ .082. ] singers: Weird Al Yankovic, Rosanne Cash, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Sarah McLachlan, Jewel Kilcher, Enya, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, Josh Groban, Clint Black. If I had to pick one male singer, it would be Josh Groban; one female singer, Sarah McLachlan. Given 3 slots, I'd add singer-songwriters Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Rosanne Cash.
[ .083. ] group: What is the difference between a band and a group? Nickel Creek at the moment.
[ .084. ] rapper: Eminem. (Surprised? He isn't the only one I listen to!)
[ .085. ] type of music: All kinds. Top 40, country, rock, oldies, classical orchestra, operatic, modern Chinese, classical Chinese, a cappella pop; some rap, jazz, reggae, funk, soul; even barbershop and madrigals when they are available.

[ .087. ] place to be: In an airport, on the way to a conference or vacation outside of the USA.
[ .088. ] radio station: Yahoo! Launch
[ .089. ] TV channel: Toss-up between the WB and UPN (a FOX affiliate carries it, but FOX is not my favorite station). SciFi and History are nice, as are Discovery Health and Travel.
[ .090. ] junk food: CHOKLIT. Ruffle-cut sour cream and onion chips. Doritos. Shortbread cookies. Microwaveable popcorn.
[ .091. ] overall food: *gasp* You can't ask a hobbit to name his single favorite food! Uhh... jade cress with straw mushrooms (aka golden needle); fried fish sandwiches; quesadillas; brie on panini bread with portobello mushrooms; cold pasta with ham, omelette strips, cucumbers, and hot pepper oil; spaghetti with peanut butter, ground sirloin, and minced green onions. (Those last three are the ones I know how to make.) I could go on...

[ .096. ] shape: A ring or torc. Ainsi soit-il.
[ .097. ] sound: The sound of laughter, especially my friends', and that of little children.

[ .106. ] computer game: Star Control II, Warcraft, Pirates!
[ .107. ] car: No preference. If it's an automatic and has enough HP to handle well, I'm fine; rather liked the Benz SUV I got to drive around Seattle once, but I plan to get a hybrid electric, and I don't think Benz SUVs are out in that flavor yet.

[ .113. ] scary movie: The Thing, Alien, and Leviathan were all scary. I found one scene in Leviathan particularly terrifying.
[ .114. ] team: The Sacramento Kings (NBA); the men's and women's USA football (soccer) teams; don't follow hockey or American football
[ .115. ] possession: Eh, I don't really care about any possession of mine, though I'd be really annoyed to lose some of my data, files, works in progress, etc. Numerramar (my ThinkPad A31p) probably has the most of those at the moment.

[ .183. ] tattoos or piercing: Neither for me.

[ .199. ] please post it if you do: OK, here's one.

[ .Y O U R - F R I E N D S. ] - 22:46

[ .231. ] best friend: A few. Jesse Reichler is a really good friend, but we have been a little out of touch the last 2-3 years. Surya Ramachandran is a very good friend. I count some of the teuncs among my best friends, and some of the FoE people (masteralida, deire, phawkwood, darana, miajesbar, etc.) are very close new friends.
[ .232. ] known longest: Hmm... :ponders: I still keep in touch with the Wu family, whose children were my friends through middle school, high school, and college. The other people I know (e.g., the Ku family, the Tseng family) are all originally friends of my parents. Surya is my oldest friend in the above list; we met in 1994. I still see Cesare Tinelli (whom I met in 1993) at conferences, and just got an e-mail today from Chris League (a friend since 1992).
[ .233. ] wish you talked to more: See all of #231 above. masteralida and miajesbar post to my LJ and other journal, but I don't get to deire and some of the others enough these days.
[ .234. ] wish you saw more: See all of #231 above.
[ .235. ] how many friends do you think you have: Close personal friends? A handful, maybe a dozen. Really trustworthy people? Several dozen. Good company? Hundreds. Online acquaintances? A couple hundred. People I personally know and admire? Many hundreds.
[ .236. ] who drives you insane after a while: Drive? I mean... I don't hang around people who drive me insane. I get frustrated with a few people's idiosyncrasies, but I generally tell them about it. Jesse's defeatism and Surya's speechifying, for example, are matters of legend. :-)
[ .237. ] who can you stay around forever and never get tired of: miajesbar, yodge, deire. masteralida (unless she has implements of trask). Ditto for darana and phawkwood, and some of the other teunc people (say, gondhir, whom I've hung out with enough that we speak in stereo on a regular basis).
[ .238. ] ever lose a good friend because you took it to the 'next level': No
[ .239. ] craziest: God, you are seriously asking a teunc that? I have no idear. Ernst Stavro Blofeld? Count Menelvagor and Baggy are laso pretty crazy.
[ .240. ] loudest: Surya. Surya. Surya!!! (Sorry, yahvah - I'll bet you thought you won! ;-))
[ .241. ] shyest: deire, most likely - though as another friend pointed out in her version of this survey, she's more outgoing among certain of us. 'Tis cllo.
[ .242. ] best hair: Good question. Once upon a time it was yodge, but then she acquired a floopy mushroom head. :o) tamf, jereeza1, queenmidalah, miajesbar, and deire all have lovely long hair. darana has very neat hair - always very professionally kempt. As for the guys, we are just sad. I probably have the worst hair, as some of you know. gondhir had a regulation haircut and is now enjoying civilian life. I can't think of a single guy on my LJ friends list, save maybe andrewwyld and mostlyacat, who has good hair. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
[ .243. ] can always make you laugh: Most every teunc, especially gondhir, nobuddy69, yodge, jereeza, and deire. hempknight gets the special honor of making me laugh while wanting to kill. :-P
[ .244. ] best eyes: Yernow, I haven't seen enough people up close to judge. I'd have to say narvi. Other friends of mine with lovely eyes: mirabehn, angelislington, and most of the Teuncettes (see the last few questions).
[ .245. ] best body: I have no idea. atomistictheist seems pretty buff, but I don't pay much attention to guys' bodies.
[ .246. ] most athletic: Dunno. Julie Thornton (who else runs 80+ miles a week? anyone?) darana and gwyneth_syeira, among my LJ friends.
[ .247. ] sex symbol: Women: I don't think any of my female friends would admit to being sex symbols (unless the symbol were THETA). Men: atomistictheist, I guess.
[ .248. ] hot tempered: Woah, now this is a tough one. kissmyascii? scottharmon and darana have mellowed.
[ .249. ] most impatient: robbyjo, hands down.
[ .250. ] shortest: I believe yodge has deire beat out by a hair, maybe half a cent.
[ .251. ] tallest: That would have to be dashamus. Edit, 12:15 CDT Sun 25 Apr 2004: yodge reminds me that barahirion is 6'5", while dashamus is only a little over 6'3".
[ .252. ] talented: That would take me a week! Seriously! jereeza, deire, and figgylicious are unbelievably sublime artists, and ldymlissa and wondergurl_77 are quite good; darana is an excellent leader and a person I would be glad to serve beside in a life-and-death situation, narvi is a poet with a bright future (I'd call him and twinbee "mead-tongued" if I knew what that meant), hfx_ben and wondergurl_77 are philosophers of the first water, phawkwood and darana are great advisors. masteralida and carida_46 are wonderful mothers and praxes seems to be a good dad as I know scottharmon and hermes_imagod are. rsmit212, f00dave, prolog and jellybeanzulu are good computer scientists, as are most of my students (robbyjo, scottharmon, hermes_imagod, chriszhong, zengeneral, silpan) in their several ways. consilience, siocled, and others are high-grade scientists, and othercriteria and cenire are real up-and-comers. twinbee, zengeneral, enochmazdah, and hfx_ben are down with the Zen. yodge, scionofgrace, deire, lonsolo, barahirion, spaced_oddity, csn, and phawkwood have musical talent coming out their ears - these are much better than I am. robbyjo, scottharmon, and hermes_imagod are top-notch coders. crypthanatopsis, erebrandir, idigital, and zengeneral aren't bad, either. wiliqueen and istari_ala are bright stars among web designers. butterflykiki is a great university prof, deire and masteralida are good primary/secondary school teachers. I bow humbly before the awesome linguistic talents of thanatos_kalos, cavlec (and her husband), tamf (and hers), and deire. marm is a high-powered attorney. mostlyacat is a hotshot engineer. celandineb, anglachel1, deire, and suricattus: stunningly good writers, with almost every piece of their work hitting on all four cylinders. Absolutely incredible. suricattus, megpie71, yodge and mrowe bear that most rarefied title: editor (let's just say Valie and be done with it). masteralida, octaviakrysk, and sui_degeneris are great listeners and empaths. yodge and miajesbar are wise beyond their years, as were gondhir and tamf in their turn and as gwyneth_syeira shall be. chevronsha and [Bad username: <lj] are the best at taking no crap. kissmyascii, shmeepster, hfx_ben, auriam, erebrandir, kewldeaf, and cretaceousrick epitomize strength in the face of terrible adversity. mirabehn, koinonia, baranoouji, and jenlight take activism to new heights. vectorious gets my vote for Pure Intellect among some incredible giants I know (just look at this list!). andrewwyld of the Other Place gets Most Honorable Mention there. (Please note: If you aren't on the above list, it doesn't mean you lack talent or even that it's escaped my notice, only that I am blessed with too many talented friends!)
[ .253. ] best singer: yodge is absobloodylutely fantastic. Seriously. She will be very successful as a professional, mark me.
[ .254. ] skinniest: miajesbar by a long shot. After that? Maybe deire.
[ .255. ] nicest: Oh, I have too many nice friends to choose one. yodge, FedoraLV, miajesbar, deire, and erebrandir are at the top on my list.
[ .256. ] best personality: See #255 above. Same people, plus masteralida, darana, phawkwood, tamf.
[ .257. ] biggest drug user: I don't know. My friends generally do not abuse alcohol and other drugs, that I know of - with the exception that many of us are caffeine junkies. Remind me to take a caffeine use poll some time.

Wow, over an hour and a half just for that section!

[ .289. ] about flag burning: It should be a legalized form of protest, even if it is often unpatriotic and usually ill-advised.
[ .290. ] of the war on terrorists: It depends on what you are referring to. Terrorism is a real problem and certainly those who practice terrorism should be stopped, but there are differences among the current administration's War on Terrorism, America's (such as it is), and the struggle to curtail terrorism in the world.
