Rednecks of Dune and More Vid Peril

darana: roflol banazir thinks miajesbar and he are teh atreides twins, though as often as you [two] finish each others sentences.

darana: I am not inclined to disagree
darana: ::chuckles::
masteralida: lol
queenmidalah: lol
lonsolo: who are the [Atreides] twins?
darana: dine
darana: dine
masteralida: Dune, even
masteralida: children of

darana: roflol yeha dune
deire: Yeeeha! Dune!
deire: Must--not--filk--Duke of Hazard theme

You, you who put Leto and Ghani climbing in through the viewports of a 'thopter named the Dr. Liet in my heead--!
*soundtrack guy cues "Dueling Balisets"*
Argh! The special crop, I tell you!

Why must payback wait as the sages wrote?1

Here, then, is some more vid peril.

I'm no tv_elf or wiliqueen, but I'm mulling over a few ideas that I promise I will inflict on you all when you least expect it:

  • "Plenty", Sarah McLachlan - I read a poem in Omni once titled "The Curse of The Telepath's Wife", and it reminded me of a few SF pairings: Spock and Valeris, Paul and Teresa Kendall2, and a few others. Maybe Duncan Idaho and Alia, now that I have finished watching Children of Dune. This is a half-formed idea, but I decided to be humble and ask for suggestions.

  • "The Greatest Man I Never Knew", Reba McEntire - Faramir Denethorion, Éowyn and Théoden, even (to an extent) Frodo and Bilbo. At first I had only Faramir in mind, but it seemed odd to do this with just a son and his father, in which case spaced_oddity's idea of Linkin Park's "Numb" works as well as any. I still think Tori Amos's "Winter" is the best Théoden song.

  • "In Another Life", Jennifer Love Hewitt - This was my first vid idea, and it is for a book series that has not yet made it to the big screen (but is on the way, God willing). Take a guess?

:looks around for readers doubled up in pain:
I clearly have not made you suffer enough.
Let's launch directly into the Saga of Pliocene Exile, Intervention, and Galactic Milieu series, then.

  • "My Immortal", Evanescence - As I wrote earlier, this works for Aiken, Mercy, and Nodonn.

  • "The Greatest Man I Never Knew", Reba McEntire - This works for the Younger Earth, too. What was it marm wrote about Joss Whedon and dysfunctional fathers? Joss has nothing on Julian May! Gerard Tremblay, Davy MacGregor, Kyle MacDonald, Ian MacDonald, Paul Remillard, Marc Remillard - the list goes on and on. Not to mention real psychopaths such as Donatien Remillard and Kieran O'Connor. And then there's the Thagdal and his get.

  • "I'm All Smiles" - This was the song Marc and Adrienne danced to in Jack the Bodiless. Eh. It might just be that certain flavors of jazz don't sit well with me, but I finally went and listened to this in 2000, and I saw what May meant by "jazz-waltz dissonances". Hard to fathom.

  • "If The Devil Danced in Empty Pockets", Joe Diffie - This was a song at the Hallowe'en costume party where Jack and Diamond met, and May mentions it specifically in Diamond Mask.

  • "Wild Angels", Martina McBride - To me, this is the Jack/Diamond song.

  • "The Wheel", Rosanne Cash - This has always been the perfect Uncle Rogi song to me. The POV shifts - from Elaine to Unifex to Diamond to Jack - and that makes it somehow all the more fitting.

  • "Change Partners", Rosanne Cash - Unifex. 'Nuff said.

  • "You Won't Let Me In", Rosanne Cash - Felice. Ohhh, maaaan, Felice Felice Felice. Listen to the song and tell me you don't hear it. Fade to Duality.

  • "Tears Falling Down", Rosanne Cash - For some reason this always struck me as a song for Patricia Castellane (the first and last Dirigent of Okanagon).

1 juing1zi3 bao4 chou2 shi2 nien2 bu1 wan3: For the superior man's vengeance, ten years is not too long.
(Compare the Klingon aphorism: "Revenge is a dish best served cold.")

2 You know I will never rest until the Galactic Milieu trilogy, and preferably the whole Julian May decalogy, is a SciFi miniseries. Just start scribbling your casting lists and lobbying whereever you can. :-)

Why, thank you, masteralida! :-D

Apr. 29th, 2004 08:16 am (UTC)
Wot uncut psots?
I put ataleast one cut - sometimes 2-3 - in every psot...

Seriously, though, what would yew have me do?

Apr. 29th, 2004 09:16 am (UTC)
Re: Huh?
The pre-cut version of this post (ie. the one that appears in people's friends lists) is 49 lines long. Yes, that's much shorter than POST-cut version, but still very long.
Apr. 29th, 2004 01:41 pm (UTC)
49 lines is very long?!
We just have different standards.
See erebrandir's LJ, or azurelunatic's, or csn's, or...

And... wait, what do you mean "the one that appears in people's friends lists"? If I cut, it propagates to all LJ clusters (modulo LJ's laggy quirks, but I think they've upgraded their network and servers), and unless you loaded early and never reloaded, it will update.

In any case, your point is well-taken, whether we agree on whether 50 lines is very long - when I update in the future, I will cut first, and the growth will happen behind the cut, like one of the Alien face-huggers...

See you on the other side
gotcha - sorry for the prod - ill make it up to you later
Not a problem, ma'am.
Good night, sleep well if you're headed that way, and please create your seat in the Other Place when you get a chance (ask masteralida if this is all Greek to you).

Apr. 29th, 2004 08:22 am (UTC)
Tell me how you want it, please
No, I do, this is my moderately successful way of hinting at people whose journals I read to compress their posts... *sheepishgrin*

That doesn't quite make sense.
The nifty psot (which I saw in finabair's LJ a few days ago) shows you dknot have to read cuts if you dknot want to - ergo, it is for people who want to override cuts so that the ones who are more sensitive to longish pic/text psots can still have their cake and eat it, too.

If you want me to cut more, though, you have only to ask - but please be more explicit. Give me an example of a psot and a suggestion on how you'd like it cut, and I will adjust accordingly. (I do multiple cuts and I leave what I consider to be "key" text showing, and I generally hide all quizzes eventually if I dknot psot them in teunc to begin with.)

'Tis relative
The way I understood the niftiness is that the stuff appears as long as you want it in your journal, but cut in the 'friends' pages of those subscribed to it.

That is nifty.
I will try it - if indeed that is the case, you have my Nifty.

The thing is that even when cut, the number of line and paragraph breaks, together with the lists and footnotes, makes your posts much longer than those of anyone else I read. You don't have to do a thing about it, of course, it's just that when I skim over what goes on in lj-friend-land, plenty of stuff gets pushed to the back by your lists so I miss it unless I remember to hit 'previous entries'.

I'm not sure I understand - you have your Friends filters set to a fixed length in lines?
I thought the number of entries stays fixed, regardless of the length.

I fixed this by increasing the span of the 'friends' page, but still, yerknow...? And pray excuse my whining here, I've been trying to go around this in several ways, but asking you to cut more seems to be the cleverest thing to do. Er. Sorry! *runs and hides*

Sorry? Sorry?
I have learned to trask the sorry!
Seriously, Hax, it's Bana here - you have nothing to be sorry for.
I'm just honestly surprised that I have anything near what you consider longish psots, acos if you look at Friends of Bill or Everybuddy, there is some pretty garrulous sutff there.

Flying Jereeza, I teunce you!
Tis indeed relative! I should correct myself - it isn't the livejournal format that makes long entries push the others, it's that the long ones make my mind wander away and skip whatever is beneath. It's the overly frequent posters - not you, you're fine - that do the other thing, srroz. I guess it's a psychological thing.
 not a problem - I can use more cuts nayway.
And anything else, just lemme know.
As long as you realize and accept that our standards may differ ("YMMV"), we're fine.

Again, this is just me, but when I click on 'friends' and see a long post, the thing that comes to mind first is 'not now' so I move on.
Filters. They do a body good.
(Same here, BTW)

please, don't waste time on extra formatting because of me!
S'ok, it's not a waste of time, any more than writing the posts in the first place.
And one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar, nesupasu?

I like the Alphabet Meme. And whoohoo! You mentioned me! (/me dances Snoopy dances). I have to agree on your song choice for Felice. I only finished two of the series, but oh, Felice was the scariest/saddest character. Aiken was just..wierd. And I felt so sorry for Mercy/Rosmar when she lost her sweetie. Though I thought she was manipulative as hell.
