Too briefly
All too brief a time, dear masteralida!

It was nice to finally meet you all, though.

'tis cool, BTW. Figures that my my delurking post (well, reply) in chambana would be in reply to a ][gs sale ad. :g:

There's a pretty healthy UIUC community on Orkut, BTW.

Where again is Parkland, exactly?
I used to live in Champaign, in Glenshire (corner of Kirby and Staley), but I always went northeast for everything (campus, shopping, grocery, to get out of town, etc.). I think PC was up north before you get to all the commercial stuff (Meijer, Circuit City, Best Buy, Borders), right?

:sigh: Now I'm bummed again because I miss BB and Borders'. :-/

Hrm, I've seen PC then.
Where again are the dorms?
I can't see how the campus fits there.

Re: Oh, there!
The dorms are over by west side park, church and state I believe. The campus definately fits, but barely. It's surrounded by a park, but butts up to a subdivision. However, we are going to get a new building in the next few years. They are moving all of admissions and student services into one separate building because we are running out of space. I also believe that an equine center is in the works.

Ahh, gotcha.

Cool.

Heh, UIUC and K-State both have top vet med schools - IIRC the equine medicine program here is pretty high up on the national lists. I've only been on a horse once before, never really ridden, but it's interesting to learn about them.

I wanted to work with horses, but that's just not how my life ended up. I used to go riding a lot, I miss it...

Greetings!
No problem.
Are you at UIUC?

Yes, that's the one. I've only been to it the once.

You bear a slight resemblance to a friend of mine, BTW.

I'm hoping to be at UIUC in a yearish, but I'm at parkland right now. I also work at parkland, so it's extra special funness!

Cool
Several of my classmates from the UIUC DCS Ph.D. program taught at Parkland. What are you majoring in?

Nice website, BTW.

Is it all right with you if I add you?
Feel free to add me back if you wish.

Re: Cool
Feel free to, thanks about the website, I've actually been meaning to redo it ^_^

I'm majoring in psychology, but all of my professors and bosses think I'm in CS, and they give me odd looks when I say psych.

I have no idea what to call it, but I'd love to go into computer psychology stuff. I've found a few sites that called it internet sociology, but I'm mainly interested in how the single person interacts with the internet and the physical computer as well.

Online social interaction, social psych, cogsci, and neuroscience
Aha! Have you read a couple of books by J. C. Herz? The one about net surfing is a bit trite now, 8 years later, but back when MUDding was a relative novelty in the USA and everybody and her brother didn't play roguelikes, I found that sort of thing rather interesting.

Ever read the Journal of Virtual Environments (JOVE)?
I only just now noticed they renamed themselves, presumably to have a more "respectable" academic-sounding title than The Journal of MUD Research (which seemed just fine to me).

Here's a page you might be interested in, and may have seen before.

When you get to UIUC, I recommend you look up the Ed Psych department (Gary Cziko et al.). I used to work with the late Janet Sniezek's1 people in her Judgement and Decision Making (JDM) lab and attended seminars by Donchin's P300 folks in Biological Intelligence at the Beckman Institute. There is a group there called Neuronal Pattern Analysis. If that sort of thing interests you, please look them up, along with the Artificial Neural Networks and Computational Brain Theory (ANNCBT) seminar. Tell 'me I sent you. :)

1 I didn't know she died until I looked for her home page, just now. Wow.

Oo! So many links, so little time! Thank you!
You're most welcome!
Please feel free to add to my ball of yarn, with a skein or two here and there later on. I'm thinking about hosting a Wiki for ANNCBT.

I see you're in cogsci but not neuroscience - have a look and let me know if you find any more HCII-related communities. Thanks!

Re: One good link deserves another
In early high school I was all hot to trot and go into neuropsych, but then I realized my hard science skills wouldn't be good enough, so I had to switch gears. Plus that whole panic attact thing during dissection. (I can't deal with seeing anyone or anything physically hurt, I somehow feel that pain and then want to barf, it's horrible.) However, I still read every book I can about the brain, with a few on evolution mixed in. Thanks for the link to neuroscience I'm going to join and flip through it for a bit. I am also in humancomputing if that falls into what you were looking for..I'll have to look more after I go back to bed!

Little-known fact to my online friends, poorly-kept secret among friends in fleshspace: I occasionally cuss like a sailor when really torqued.

I'm surprised you didn't put "s" as the last key used. :oD
It had occurred to me!
In fact, it did before I interpreted "key" as a piece of metal - but then, it was almost 05:00 and I get a little stupid at that hour.
