Early Birthday Present from hempknight

A present sent to me by hempknight - he created the character model in Poser 5 and used a lot of Photoshop for post-processing. This plus another one he is making for me, for crgjournals, combine to make this a very teuncy day indeed!

Thank you, thank you!

Eh...just for the record. The alien chick is DAZ3D Vicky 3 with a custom skin texture made by yours truly. Clothes are also from DAZ, except the robe which is by yours truly. The robots, props and the set were all maded in Maya 4.5 and imported to Poser where through some witchcraft they were given bones so they can flail about with their arms and legs. All other textures, yours truly again.

Seriously, thanks again, Maggie.

Very good
Is the skin a procedural texture? The robe? The floor? The robot shell?

Cool. Thanks again!

No. It's all lovingly drawn by hand (well, mouse) to fit the meshes exactly.

Well, ok. Not the floor.

I've never understood you masochists
No. It's all lovingly drawn by hand (well, mouse) to fit the meshes exactly.
Lovingly?
I didn't know you cared!

Well, ok. Not the floor.
*sbo*
Don't you know, the floor is the teunciest part of a render!
It's where I spent all my days and nights prostrate with... um, Bayesian network research.

Persistence of Vision (POV-RAY)

Oh, my land, yes.

I had a student (Ruiqing He) who did his Master of Software Engineering (MSE) portfolio project using POV-RAY, in 2002. He was rendering Lindenmayer systems. The de facto advisor on his project was Steve Welch, and he preferred the flexiblility of the POV-RAY language for incorporating components. Ir was rather a neat little project, extending Sheng Qiang's 2001 work using Java3D.

Re: Persistence of Vision (POV-RAY)
::blinks:: Blender does render and it has a plugin for Yafray. So you can utilize it for some pretty nice things. It, of course, has it's limitations in rendering as well.

Blender
I've heard the name twice now - once from a student in passing and once from darana and deire. What do you think of it? (And what have you been able to do with it?)

Re: Blender
answers: not much. I only know how to mix and shade primitives right now.
it seems pretty powerful, but the documentation is poor and the interface is very cryptic (think xfig - like).
the perks: it is absolutely 100% free, it is open-sourced, it is cross platform, and it can make povray files.

It sounds painful, from everything I hear.
I am very lazy when it comes to learning shader languages.

Ugh. That tells me a lot.

Well, so are Liquid and Aqsys, if you have Maya, which is $600 for the Maya 6 Unlimited School or Student Copy, and free in the Personal Learning Edition (PLE). See this ; I'm not sure whether the School Copy does watermarking, nor whether the PLE works with Liquid. If you check either of them out, would you please let me know?

Thanks,

Re: Blender
Using Blender to do a rendering is like using a mallet to cook a nice meal. Sure, it might work, but not exactly a pleasurable or an overall easy experience.

Pleasure? PLEASURE?!
Using Blender to do a rendering is like using a mallet to cook a nice meal.
Why, that's--! That's...
That's not a half-bad analogy.

Do you mind if I call you Eilonwy, daughter of Angharad, daughter of Regat? Just for kicks, mind you. No strings attached.

Sure, it might work, but not exactly a pleasurable or an overall easy experience.
Tell me more about pleasure, Lord hempknight.

If you must...but you know I'd rather you call me Dorothy.

Tell me more about pleasure, Lord hempknight.

Not in public, sir. Not in public.
