Here's my fortnightly update:
- 1. Towards a faster 64-bit SMP desktop: Some good ideas were posted; I will keep reading up on Tom's Hardware and leafing through Maximum PC and the book.
- 2. To Tiki or not to Tiki, that is the question: Better CMS Security: I'm going to use Plone for KDD, TikiWiki for everything else (except possibly a PHPnuke for the SUROP site).
- 3. Notebook computer hard drives - cheaper HDs and fast cloning: Well, I'm still watching Slickdeals.net, or I would be if I weren't so swamped.
Now for the new questions:
Memory, it's so easy to leave me
What kind of memory is the best to give as a Christmas present: Secure Digital (SD) memory, CompactFlash, USB JumpDrive/Cruzer/data keys, Sony Memory Sticks, or something else?
Cleaning up commercial annoyware
The sheer amount of factory-installed annoyware on Hirilonde, my Dell Inspiron 6000, is - well, annoying. These 60-day trial things drive me nuts, because I actually have better software of the antivirus and web graphics variety than comes with the computer. Now I've filled up my measly 40Gb and the stupid thing keeps alert-boxing my procrastinating butt to do something. I conjure it's time to just end WinXP Home and start afresh with WinXP Pro SP2, but mayhap there's some way I can make a clean sweep? (There used to be a product called CleanSweep, IIRC.)
Also, why do I keep lapsing into Firefly-speak?
OpenOffice as an MS Office replacement: anything else?
I thought our department's MSDN covers Office 2003, but apparently not. Suppose I lay down OpenOffice and Mozilla Thunderbird. What else will I need to be compatible with Evil?
Thanks very much in advance!
