Ubuntu update: PCMCIA Plug and Play and remote access

Ubuntu Linux is now installed on Finrod, Numerramar (dual-booting with Windows 2000), and Telperion.

My current tasks are:

  • PCMCIA Plug and Play: I can get Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to recognize the PCI PCMCIA adapter (the slot where the PCMCIA card is plugged in), but eth0 won't automatically start. Is there any Plug and Play support in Ubuntu for PCMCIA devices?

  • Mounting my FAT32 scratch drive in both Win2K and Ubuntu: I had split the 37Gb of free space on Numerramar as 28Gb scratch, 1Gb Linux swap, and 8Gb Linux. Later, I repartitioned it 20Gb / 1Gb / 16Gb. When I booted back into Win2K, it said that the scratch partition (20Gb) was not formatted, so I did so.
Edit, 14:10 CDT Sun 13 Aug 2006 - All I had to do was create /media/hda2 and issue a mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /media/hda2, then update /etc/fstab accordingly (using the same mount options as for my NTFS drive, /dev/hda1), and I was all set.

  • Remote access from Windows: I have CygWin X, XDeep, and XWin32 set up on Hirilonde, but I'm still looking for ways to connect to my Ubuntu systems. Does anyone have a pointer to documentation on IP tunnelling in X via a port? Also, is there a way to do this from the command line in Linux itself?

Thanks in advance,
Banazir
