Riggs, I'm getting too old for this lembas

Whew! That's a wrap.
Our NIH proposal went out today - I'll post more info about it after the review is done, especially if we get it.

Today was quite a mad rush:

05:50 : go to sleep
08:35 : wake up, get cracking on forms
09:00 - 10:30 : frantic phone calls to deans, co-PIs
10:30 - 12:00 : finishing touches on proposal
12:00 - 13:30 : finish all forms, print proposal
13:30 - 14:00 : more frantic phone calls
15:00 - 16:30 : chasing all over campus for signatures
16:40 : return to Pre-Award Services (our grants and contracts office)
16:40 - 17:00 : last-minute fixes, print edited pages
17:00 - 17:05 : print 5 copies of (50+ page) proposal
17:05 - 17:15 : collate 5 copies of (50+ page) proposal because xerox machine defaulted to "no collation"
17-15 - 17:20 : wait for assistants to stuff padding in the FedEx box; slap label on it, get call tag
17:20 - 17:30 : drive quickly to FedEx
17:30 : sent the boxed copies out!

Our grants and contracts office was a great help, and so were all the deans who sent us struff on a few days' notice.

I've gotta stop doing this "Kansas Hsu and the Proposal of DOOM" thing. :-)

Edit: Naturally, Hurricane Isabel closed NIH on Friday, so the proposal actually arrived Monday. :-P

That damned butterfly with its wing-flapping ... nasty sense of humour it has!!

Greets, Bill. I love the "Jedi Hobbit" notion (Bilbo became a friend when I purchased the BBC recording of "There and Back Again" in early 70s).
I've recently come up with the concept of "CityZen, where something like bushido combines with something like Shambhala's sense of "great eastern sun" to invigorate individuals in their most mundane aspects ... Jedi Hobbit seems to capture that essence for me. (Maybe someone can come up with an icon?! *grin*)

I probabubbly have too many butterflies in my life - not least of which is the MSN one. :o)

The idea is due to a 1999 rec.arts.books.tolkien thread originated by Peter Johnson, then a student programmer of mine: "A Long Time Ago in A Galaxy Not Far Away" (SW meets LoTR).

Sounds interesting, and turesu apuropo, as we say in Fraponais. I'll check with my more artistically/iconically inclined friends, and we'll see wot we can come up with together. :-)

Nice to make your acquaintance!

Re: Butterflies in America
The MSN thing is more like a flying hippopotamus!
*heads up!*

huh huh huh ... I must tell my friend Miya about Fraponais (as in Franglais, oui?). Forgive me, but I couldn't parse "turesu apuropo" ... a propos?
Please teach me others!! :-)

I can just imagine Bilbo-types engaged in something like XP ... the bad guys are quaking!

BTW I subscribed to futuretech and hope to reply to your "foam" item this evening.

*wonders about Fraponais for "a la prochaine"; fails*

I'll check it out. I'm no materials scientist, though, and my chemistry is a tad bit oxidized.
